Effect of Total Body X-Irradiation on the Content of Trace Manganese in the Subcellular Fractions of Rat Liver

Abstract
The author has studied the effect of total body X-irradiation on the concentration of trace manganese(Mn) in the subcellular fractions of rat liver.
Various time intervals, i.e. 2, 5, 12 and 24 hours were chosen to take samples after the dose of 2000 r X-irradiation. For the fractionation modised Hogeboom and Schneider¢¥s method was adopted. Quantity of Mn was measured by means of neutron activation analysis.
The concentration of Mn in the nuclei and supernatant was not changed significantly. But in the mitochondria the concentration decreased until 12 hours post irradiation and return to the control level within 24 hours. On the contrary the concentration increased in the microsome until 12 hours after the irradiation and return to the normal level within 24 hours.
The reasonable interpretation of these results were such that the decrease of the concentration in the mitochondria has some relation to the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation induced by total body X-irradiation. The manganese released from the mitochondria seems to be transfered to the microsome.
